It would probably be less futile developing for openoffice, as there is already an addon to office to open them AFAIK. At present XLS opens in most Open source spreadsheets, but SpreadsheetML does not... Oddly enough the best solution I came up with for this was generating Gnumeric XML files, and using ssconvert to generate XLS files. As far as supporting SpreadsheetML, I'm not sure my conscience could live with supporting MS on this after what they did to Peter Quinn..... Regards Alan Daniel Convissor wrote:
Hey Folks: Having an issue with the Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer package not working for cells with contents larger than 255 characters. The package supposedly supports a more recent format that can handle larger cells, but the files it outputs are invalid. Top that off with binary output being a total pain anyway. So, I am taking the API of Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer and changing it to output SpreadsheetML. SpreadsheetML is an XML format created by our "friends" at Microsoft to represent Excel spreadsheets. http://www.microsoft.com/office/xml/default.mspx My question to y'all is what do you think the package should be named? My thought is "Spreadsheet_SpreadsheetML_Writer." But perhaps it should be "Spreadsheet_ML_Writer" or "XML_SpreadsheetML_Writer" or something else entirely. Thanks, --Dan
