You're right.
I was only clinging to "extensions" because that was the original meaning
of the "E" in PEAR. "packages" is much more clear.
Elsewhere there was a discussion that PEAR doesn't really hold any
applications (the A in the acronym) nor extensions -- so PEAR isn't really
an Acronym anymore. (or, at least, PEAR is not defined by what the acronym
originally stood for.)
