I therefore also would like to announce a new feature we are currently
implementing into pearweb a way of mapping developers around the world.
as we I mean:
- Christian Weiske (static maps generation),
- Brett Bieber (feedbacks & testing)
- I (David Coallier) (javascript, gmaps implementation, webservice,
logisitics )
In this you can see a description of what has been started and here's
another update and a clearer description of the feature
(**PLEASE NOTE THAT EVEN IF I MAY USE PRESENT TENSE, THIS IS CURRENTLY ONLY
IMPLEMENTED ON LOCAL PEARWEB INSTALLATION NOT LIVE ON
HTTP://PEAR.PHP.NETTHANKS**):
The feature of having a way to map pear developers around the world will
bring two major things to developers (I believe). First, developers will be
able to meet with other php devs which is of course cool, but also, a
contractor that uses a package and see that you are actually very near him
will be much more interested in requesting services from the developer in
question.
So the description of the idea:
There will be three type of maps on the site, first of all there is a new
page available (which will be located to pear.php.net/map/ that has a public
map, with all markers and locations of developers (using gmap2). Also in the
profile editing part of your account, you now have a button (link) "Open
Map" which will pop up a map and then you have to double click on your
location in order to automatically fill the two new added fields "latitude"
and "longitute". The developers section only work well with firefox and
safari so far, although, the main page (http://pear.php.net/map/) has been
tested by a couple people and so far seems to work perfectly with : firefox
1.5/firefox 2.0/opera/safari/ie6/ie7 which is imho most of what we have to
cover. Although, all of the people accessing the public maps that want
interaction, do need to have javascript enable.
Although, for each and everyone of you that don't have javascript enabled,
we also generate maps using xplanet, that are displayed (without
interaction). Those maps will be regenerated about once a week.
Resume: You go to your profile, click on open map, double click on your
location, go to http://pear.php.net/map/ and see you as a little monkey
icon.
As some of us discussed, this will bring the possibility to bring also the
*map pear users* on a possible phase two, and for possible phase 3 of this
*project* we might list each users used packages, etc. But that is still
far.
More ?
There is also going to be a webservice available for anyone to request which
will be located at : http://pear.php.net/map/locationREST.php which will
return something as such as :
<map>
<developer>
<name>PersonX</name>
<lat>LATITUDECOORDS</lat>
<long>LONGITUDECOORDS</long>
</developer>
<developer>
<name>PersonY</name>
<lat>LATITUDECOORDS</lat>
<long>LONGITUDECOORDS</long>
</developer>
<!-- And so on for other devs.. -->
</map>
Please all note that this is all coded and ready to be launched. If anyone
has time, please contact me and we will coordinate and fix a time and date
in order to commit to cvs. There is modification in the users table, new
pngs, new javascript code, new folders, etc.

Hi everyone, Thanks to a little time on an airplane, and a bit of good work by Arnaud Limbourg, we have two new features at pearweb: 1) account registration for voting in PEAR's general elections is now automated (arnaud) 2) package homepages now display very useful information about bug tracker activity than can be used to judge whether a package is being actively maintained independent of the label. (me) Check out your packages to see how yours stack up against the rest of PEAR! Note that the age of bugs is the important thing here. For instance, the Pager package is ranked 169 out of 170 packages with open bugs (bad), even though it has only 1 open bug, because the bug is more than 2 years old. This bug could easily be resolved (excellent solution is suggested by the original opener, Alan Knowles), and is an example of a bug that should be cleaned up as it helps to give PEAR a bad name for no good reason at all. By fixing and closing this bug, Pager would go from #169 to #1 instantly. Everyone wins. Automated account registration is in place to allow the implementation of PHP-wide elections. Many elections will only be open to developers with pear.dev karma, like PEAR president, for instance. Some important elections, such as what direction PEAR should take, are going to be open to all people with an interest in PEAR. Shortly, I will post our first official election to sift through mission ideas for PEAR, and help to determine where we should go next. At that time, we will be advertising the voting registration and the election simultaneously, and will ask for your help in spreading the word. Now, I need some heavy testing. Those of you with a spare email account that is not the same as your existing PEAR account, would you browse to http://pear.php.net/account-request.php and register to vote in a general PEAR election?please reject my first account named "davidctest" that I have just created it was in the wrong section ;_) And ok let's test this! WARNING: *Before* testing, check the "Last updated: Wed Nov 29 05:04:46
2006 UTC" string at the bottom of the page. If it says "Wed Nov 29" then wait a bit. The update should say "Last updated: Sun Dec 3 05:04:46 2006 UTC" or something along those lines. Another way to test is to browse to http://pear.php.net/account-request-confirm.php - wait until you don't get a 404 before trying to open the account. We mainly want to hear how the flow process works for you, what is confusing, what works great, and so on.I really like the account-request process (the new one) it makes it much more clear on why you need a pear account and if not why not..
