Hi,
I'd love to see SVN tried as well. However, I do not want to see this
at pear.php.net. pear.php.net is hosted on pb12.php.net through pair
networks. cvs.php.net is hosted by yahoo on a completely different
server in a different state. If PEAR is to get an SVN server, it would
need to be new hardware dedicated to the SVN server. If you are reading
this, and in fact have dedicated hardware to donate for this purpose, it
would be a truly extraordinary gift to PEAR.
HOWEVER and this is a big however:
I don't want to make this move unless more than one person can have
maintaining the SVN server *specifically* assigned as part of their job
responsibilities. This works very well for the PHP Group, who has
Rasmus to administer cvs.php.net through his work at Yahoo.
I also do not want to see chaos as everyone tries switching to SVN. At
first, I would like to see the PEAR svn used *STRICTLY* for developing
packages for the "PEAR2" I've been writing about on pear-core, which is
to say brand new packages that are PHP5+ and are designed for the new
packaging/registry format. Once we've had some time and ability to
experiment and are sure we have worked out the kinks, I'd like to see
the SVN opened up to all PEAR packages.
All of this is dreaming unless someone can come up with the hardware.
Lukas: what were you talking about when you said PEAR now has dedicated
hardware? pb12 is used for pear.php.net and pecl.php.net still.
Thanks,
Greg
