The only thing the "static" keyword does is not set up $this inside a
method. You can still call it from an object instance but it behaves
the same way. It's not rocket science, but it does make things better
imo. The PEAR class had tremendous problems with calls to methods in
other classes intended to be static that also doubled as non-static such
as raiseError(), which would use the local settings if a class extended
PEAR. Anyways, static has worked this way since PHP 5.0, welcome to PHP
5 :)
