Hi all, I'm Franck, one of the two actual developpers of PEAR::Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer. I have been away since five months... and I just began to work on current bugs, since one week. Personnally, I'm agree with the three options. 1) When a first release of OpenDocumentSpreadsheet will be released, i will be there for contributing it in bug fixing or feature request solving, but i'm waiting for the first release. 2) The complexity of the XLS file format explains the number of bugs. And personnally, while PEAR will be there, and while the PEAR team will accept my bugfixes and features request solving, i will be there 3) If PEAR::SEW is deprecated in favour of PHPExcel, and if PHPExcel agrees a new developper for BIFF5/8 format, in this cas, i agree with this option. I know : I talk about me. But Daniel asked my feelings. My other feeling is that a decision must be taken, a decision where everyone is satisfied of the decision. As you can see it, I agree with three options. May be an another option ? I let the place for another people. PS : Sorry my froggy english. 2010/4/2 Daniel O'Connor <daniel.oconnor@gmail.com>: > Hey Maarten, > You are no doubt aware of PEAR's Spreadsheet Excel Writer package; and > probably know better than most of us that it is... somewhat old and creaky. > > I notice you are already producing PEAR installable releases of PHPExcel, > and its actually pretty simple these days to get a simple channel up and > running. > IE: http://www.pirum-project.org/ or > http://pearfarm.org/ are the two newest > entrants into the market, and there's a few others. > > What would be the chances of you or your project taking a look at doing it? > If you are already doing that and I've just not spotted it - great! > > > The reason I ask is that our poor old package is responsible for a huge > amount of bug reports and other things we don't really have the manpower to > fix. > > Our options are > 1) throw loads of manpower behind > http://pear.php.net/package/OpenDocument > and convert the world to open standards > 2) live with the current package as it is and forever receive bug reports > about it > 3) deprecate the package in favour of PHPExcel being available via a pear > channel > > I really would like to do #3; because I think it's the most practical thing > going forward. > > Franck & Carsten - what would your feelings be on this? > > -Daniel >
