the minimum dependency set to PHP 5.3 is mainly due to great demand for full PHP 5.3 support without even STRICT errors. It might work with PHP 5.2, I haven't tested it extensively as I did for PHP 5.3 and don't have time to do it.
So, I think changing requirements to 5.3 was a little bit hasty. Let's change this to 5.2 and we'll stay with this if no errors will be found. Additionally, releasing MDB2 3.0.0b1 would be a good compromise, because as I see from your posts that this BC-break wasn't really a BC-break.
Unfortunately one can't release MDB2 3.0.0b1 per current PEAR rules, it should be MDB3 3.0.0b1 with all classes renamed. That's precisely why Lorenzo doesn't want to do this.
p.s. not all users are using PEAR Installer.
If they don't use PEAR installer *and* don't check release notes manually I feel very little sympathy for them.
