Hello Everyone,
While the website at pear.php.net is quite functional, it's also quite old. It really does not showcase the best of PEAR, and has a reputation for hosting old and buggy packages.
A newer website has been available at pear2.php.net (screenshot link below [1]) for some time, but no one knows about it. At PHPCon [2], I mentioned it to several people and reactions varied from "there's another website" to "there's a PEAR2?". The new site doesn't have as many features but it does have:
- a better design
- a focus on pear2
- active development
I propose we replace the existing website at pear.php.net with the new site. This will accomplish several objectives:
- better promote pyrus as a tool for managing pear packages
- let people know there's a pear2
- let people know pear is still alive
- incentivize people to add features to the new site
Of course the new site is missing several important features, but I think we can move over without them, provided we still make the old site available. The features we would lose are:
- docbook documentation integration
- phpdocumentor integration
- pepr
- bug tracker
These can all be added to the new site later on. It currently functions quite well without them.
The pear and pear2 package channels should remain as they are for existing compatibility with the pear installer.
I'm not entirely sure what's technically required to make this move. A quick estimate is:
- move pear.php.net to old.pear.php.net
- replace pear.php.net with pear2.php.net
- create rewrite rules for old content to direct inbound traffic from 404 pages on pear.php.net to old.pear.php.net
- add a prominent link to the old site in the header
At this stage, I'd love to hear feedback from the community about moving the site. If the reaction is generally positive, the PEAR Group will vote on moving things over.
Cheers,
Mike
