Hi Folks,
The DBA class and friends located in DB_DBA are almost ready for an
initial release. The classes are working well for me, and though they
could always use some more documentation, I feel that there is enough
included to start using the classes.
What is there is a wrapper class for the dba functions built into PHP, a
replacement class (DBA_Simple) that implements a DB-style database in PHP,
a compatibility class that exports the dba functions on installations that
do not have DBA compiled in (does dba compile into windows?).
Additionally, a table class and a database manager class provide advanced
functionality like selects, sorts, joins, projects, automatic table
locking and more.
The benefit of these classes over flat files or straight-up dba
functions is a richer query system, more uniform access and DBA_Simple
appears to be higher performance than flat files (it uses a linear index
to access a data file, though the data file can be read without it). Cons
are extra complexity (though not much more) and potential impedence
mismatches moving between servers (i.e. different dba drivers might be
available for use), though this can be prevented by using the simple
driver.
The benefit of these classes over a full-blown DBMS is that it runs
completely within a webserver with no extra software to run, and it is
especially useful when no DBMS is available for use, or you want to use a
cheap hosting service but still have database access. Cons are that it
does not support SQL, but rather simple database operations are
implemented as individual functions and nested to form a query. If you
know database basics, it should not be hard forming queries.
May I ask for a little peer review and package-releasing magic on the pear
website? Thanks. I hope that someone finds this useful besides me.
