They are. I do not like the registry too, but this replaces the old :
SET PEAR_INSTALL_DIR=c:\php\pear
which does not work anymore on 'recent' win32 OSes. From the PEAR codes,
that does not change anything.

No PEAR setting stored there except the path. Storing something else
would not be portable, as you said :).

Hmmmm, Java, MSDEV, Delphi, they all use it to set permanent ENV
variables. As they all use rc.local to set them on Linux. I really do
not see a problem here, is there one ?
