could someone reccomend any?
I have read some articles online about MVC-Pattern, DAO, multi-tier
aplications fom phppatterns.com, some articles from php-magazines and other
sites, so I thought I understood this.

But I think this has nothing to do with using a DB-abstraction. Of course I
will use Objects to access my Data and these Objects use PEAR::DB, I use
smarty for templates, and an own Controller. But I don't see the advantage
to write the complete code for accessing the database new for each database.
That's why there are projects as PEAR::DB or ADODB... ;-)

Yes, I _use_ such a layer, and _this_ layer uses PEAR::DB, so I only have to
write this layer once.
