No, decided to chuck all that & just start from scratch, as you intimated.
At first I used EasyPHP v1.7 (which bundles more stable production
versions), but this time didn't mind individually downloading newer, perhaps
less stable releases and configuring them myself:
Apache 2.050
PHP 5.0.1
MySQL 5.0.1
Perl 5.8.4
So far I've got Apache running with PHP, and though MySQL is up I haven't
quite talked it into being friends with the web server (yet). Got Perl as
when I first loaded Apache it seemed miffed that it wasn't on the system.
Am using binaries for everything, though I got the source too just in case I
wanted to compile anything differently.
Haven't even tried Pear, figured I'd do that after MySQL.
There still does seem to be a problem with PHP finding it's .ini file. I
had it in the same folder as the php apache dll, but it couldn't find it.
Placing it in the windows root (c:\winnt for me) got it to read. Haven't
found anywhere yet, just how to specify the location of the ini file.
This time I centrally located all the apps under a 'bin' folder (bin\apache,
bin\php, bin\mysql, etc.), rather than letting them place directories off
the root.
Need to do a little research & determine how to specify the locations of the
various ini & conf files (my.ini, php.ini, httpd.conf, etc.). Would like to
keep them all handy in the same folder.
What have I really gleaned from all this? That I should have paid more
attention to Linux. Have played with it off and on for eight or nine years,
kept putting it back down because I had all this time invested in
MicroSloth. Have giving serious thought to just building another spare box
& making that my testing server, but how many learning curves should one
take on simultaneously? ;)
Will let you know if I get anywhere with the Pear problem.
