by "non-standard" I meant non-W3C standard compliant (XML 1.0), not non-PHP
or non-PEAR compliant (whatever that would mean)
From: http://www.w3c.org/TR/2004/REC-xml-20040204/#sec-starttags
Empty-element tags MAY be used for any element which has no content, whether
or not it is declared using the keyword EMPTY. For interoperability, the
empty-element tag SHOULD be used, and SHOULD only be used, for elements
which are declared EMPTY.
