Unfortunately we are using php 4.06 and won't upgrade for about 2
months. Is it possible to use some of the functionality of pear without
having to recompile PHP. For example can we use the database abstraction
layer? If so what would we have to do?
Thanks,
Jeff

Only if your PHP is older than 4.1.0.

Since you ask: no. :)
You could install it in a separate directory (so it doesn't end up in
your
deployment env's include_path), but I don't recommend testing software
on
a production server.
Btw, check out go-pear: lynx -source http://pear.php.net/go-pear|php -q
