Most of it should work, but you may get an error about the version_compare
function not being defined. In most places where version_compare is used,
it should check whether the function exists first, but I have not
positively verified that this is 100% backwards-compatible yet.
Beyond that, 4.0.4pl1 is the PHP version that PEAR has a hard dependency
to (that was when the "$foo =& new" syntax was introduced).
