I never assumed PHP was not good enough. I just know that the
structure i'm using is not perfect at the moment and needs to be
changed. I'll make changes to my app. as soon as possible, but since
my time is quite limited (by my boss) at the time being, i try to
gather as many advices as possible before i keep on developping.
In my opinion, the biggest error in my "app" at the moment is the loop
that sends the emails, since every Mail::send call using SMTP driver
makes a new connection to the SMTP server then disconnects. In my
situation, 3500+ connections / disconnections are made. It looks like
if i give the Mail::send function an array as a parameter, there will
be one connection, 3500 messages sent, then one disconnection. I
assume it will be much faster.
I will also implement this "delayed send" method, queuing the mailing
operations in a MySQL DB, then processing all the mailings using a
command line script called by a crontab.
By the way, Alexander, are there methods to interface majordomo (or
ezml) with PHP ? Any sample i could have a look at ? Our application
is not only an email sending tool, but also a multiuser web based
mailing list management tool. So maybe i could keep on using PHP to
manage the database, then send the mailings using a "real" Mailing
List tool.
Thanks, and regards.
