pear installer broken for me again...

Hi all, I am not sure about everyone else experiences with the pear installer, (mine have been failures almost everytime for one reason or another on multiple machines and oss), I get the following message when performing any upgrade at all: No handlers for package.xml version 2.0 This is the new error of the month. And yes, its sudo, and you can rule all the dumb obvious things one should do when calling. Errors dont surprise me at all, the installer seems to always be in some disfunctional state to one degree or another... Next error for pear list-all: Invalid return payload: enable debugging to examine incoming payload. Nice huh?... If the installer cant install, or is so touchy that somebody in some package on some server in some channel typos something, and it breaks the system... what is the point? I mean really, the installer is getting in the way of people using PEAR. Several people new to PHP at our company, have just given up, and downloaded simple zip/tar files of other available libraries because they could simply download them and dump them on the path. The installer is also nice big fat problem for shared host. Lastly, putting things in the install documentation for PEAR, the part for a manual DL and dump last and a bit obscured just again alienates people from the library. <end rant /> I have officially dumped the installer. I will no longer use it. And, after all this time, why is there no page on the pear site that simply lets you check box the packages you want, and dl a simple zip/tar of your selections plus the required core libs? This is a mindless task, and would greatly increase the packages face time with

people who do not care to "install".    But pear seems to have become something that doesnt want people to use it.  Or more precisely, "certain" people not to use it, which is assenine(sp?).

Build it and they will come. Close it or make it a pain in the ass, and people will leave in droves. my .02 jack handy
