I need to start using a template system/package for my projects but don't need a super-dooper powerful one like Smarty.
This is a bit like asking if red is better than blue since there are many different options, needs and experiences. Personally, I have used Smarty, PHPLib, IT, Sigma and Savant. I don't like Smarty. It often mixes View and Controller tasks. It is too heavy. If your site is not too complex, you are safe using Sigma, which is more featured than IT if you have to make it evolve later. With Sigma, you are sure you don't mix View and Controller tasks, which should be the basis of any template engine IMO. If your site is big and has a lot of feautres, I recommend Savant though. But it requires personal discipline and a good understanding of what MVC means. It is easier to make mistakes with Savant than with any other template engines. But it also gives more power and is probably faster than the other ones. If you are working with designers who don't know PHP, or who you don't trust, use Sigma. Apart from that, Flexy might be an option, I have never used it myself.
