I found that the installation path is embedded in the *.reg file, so you can't just move the directory! See my recent gripe! Also, if you move things, and fix the *.reg files, the next install resets things back to c:\php4. If you find out how to change the install path, please let me know. I'm trying to install horde too.I finally got it installed by using short file names. I didn't try that after first running into a problem because when I did check for the short file name for the folder "PHP 4.3.1" at the command prompt with: c:\>dir /X The folder "PHP 4.3.1" didn't have a short name. Note: "dir /X" shows the short name (8.3) assigned to a file with a long name. I then remembered that I had disabled the creation of short file names by changing the registry. To change it back I had to reset that change (for more information about this take a look into http://tweakxp.com/tweakxp/display.asp?id=517 or, if the link fails, you can turn off this setting by changing the default value of the NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation registry entry (in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Filesystem) to 1 Once I changed that back I had to reboot and then rename the "PHP 4.3.1" folder to something temporary, then creating it again and moving the files from the temporary folder back into the "PHP 4.3.1". After checking it with "dir /X" I could see the short file name. Once that was done I run the installation again, from the "C:\Program Files\PHP 4.3.1\cli\" with the following command (DOS window): C:\Program Files\PHP 4.3.1\cli>php -n -r "include 'http://go-pear.org';" When asked about the folders, I filled them up like this:
1. Installation prefix : c:\progra~1\php43~1.1 2. Binaries directory : c:\progra~1\php43~1.1 3. PHP code directory : c:\progra~1\php43~1.1\pear4. Documentation base directory : c:\progra~1\php43~1.1\pear\docs
5. Data base directory : c:\progra~1\php43~1.1\pear\data 6. Tests base directory : c:\progra~1\php43~1.1\pear\testsEverything went fine. I got a warning about the php.ini include_path setting: Please look over your php.ini file to make sure c:\progra~1\php43~1.1\pear is in your include_path.
Current include path : .;c:\php4\pear Configured directory : c:\progra~1\php43~1.1\pearCurrently used php.ini (guess) : c:\windows\php.ini And sorted it by changing the entry in the php.ini to: include_path = ".;c:\progra~1\php43~1.1\pear" Finally, it mentioned: ** The 'pear' command is not currently in your PATH, so you need to ** use 'c:\progra~1\php43~1.1\pear' until you have added ** 'c:\progra~1\php43~1.1' to your PATH environment variable. And to sort that under Windows XP, without creating an autoexec.bat, which I never had under this OS, I clicked on Start, right-clicked on "My Computer" icon, selected "Properties" and once the System Properties window opened, selected the Advanced tab, and at the bottom left corner, clicked the "Environment Variables" button. Under the "System variables" heading selected the Path variable and clicked on the Edit button. Then I changed the contents from: %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Support Tools\
- to -%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Support Tools\;c:\progra~1\php43~1.1 And that was it.

When running the installation and answering the placement of the installation, I wrote c:\program files\php 4.3.1, as that is where my PHP installation lives. This gave an error an exited the installation. [...] Downloading package: Mail.............ok Downloading package: XML_Parser.......ok Extracting installer..................ok failed to write \program files\php 4.3.1\pear\data\PEAR\.tmppackage.dtd IMHO, this is due to the use of spaces in the folder name, but I could be wrong. I finally got PEAR installed by letting use the defaults. I now plan on moving the folder under \program files\php 4.3.1\ and see if that works (preliminary test not satisfactory). Also, on trying to overcome the installation error, I defined each of the 6 folders for the installation as such:1. Installation prefix : c:\program files\php 4.3.1 2. Binaries directory : c:\program files\php 4.3.1 3. PHP code directory : c:\program files\php 4.3.1\pear4. Documentation base directory : c:\program files\php 4.3.1\pear\docs5. Data base directory : c:\program files\php 4.3.1\pear\data 6. Tests base directory : c:\program files\php 4.3.1\pear\testsand also created a pear folder under the data folder, but then I got this error instead: Downloading package: Mail.............ok Downloading package: XML_Parser.......ok Extracting installer..................ok failed to write \program files\php 4.3.1\pear\PEAR\.tmpAutoloader.php Then I tried once more, with the folders all set manually and also creating the extra pear folder under the pear folder, and I got another error... [... a few minutes later...] It seems that copying the folders created under c:\php4 to c:\program files\php 4.3.1\ will not to the trick. Running the <?php require_once 'DB.php'; ?> gives a warning. Note: In php.ini include_path = ".;c:\Program Files\PHP 4.3.1\pear" Warning: main(DB.php) [function.main.html]: failed to create stream: No such file or directory in... If I try to run the pear.bat I get: C:\Program Files\PHP 4.3.1>pear 'php_bin@' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file... Got to go... will continue later.
