I agree, it's hard. I am in the same situation as you. New to this, been
programming for many years (mostly C++) and nearly lost all my hair :-)
I think as we grow older we get a bit more lazy. I have just reached 40 and
I notice that making the effort to study new stuff is costing me more energy
than 20 years ago.
Sometimes I don't know the solution to a specific problem using QuickForm
and that's when I post a message here. Sometimes they get answered and
sometimes they don't. If they don't I suspect it's because it's a question
to which I could have found the solution myself if only I would have made
more effort. Sometimes I post the message, and I start thinking of a
solution afterwards. When it does get answered I have already found my own
solution (which is quite often different than the one proposed).
What I am trying to say:
PEAR is a great extension to PHP and best of it all, it is FREE. Like PHP is
free, and MySQL is free and a development IDE as MAGUMA Studio which I am
using now is also free. And even the free version gets supported! I am used
to using MicroSoft development tools so I can hardly believe this all.
A lot of effort is being made, by lots of people and it is only a matter of
time before the documentation will get better because I can already see that
this community is growing and with PHP being one of the main server side
programming languages I believe it is unstoppable. In the meanwhile we have
to try and read the documentation that is available, sometimes study the
source code (which I also prefer not to do) and ask people here how to deal
with certain kind of problems. I sometimes feel embarrassed by asking
questions which are obviously to trivial to answer by certain people, but I
still do it because that way I learn.
I hope that in the end I will be able to help future developers with their
questions or maybe contribute in the documenting part of this.
