Hi list,
It's been a while since I've had time to do much PHP-related work, but I've
recently found myself with all the time in the world, so I figured I might
as well do something with it...
I've had a couple of extensions kicking around for the past few years and I
was previously hosting them on my own. However, the hosting situation has
recently crumbled and I find myself in need of a way to let people continue
to use the extensions I've written. I've considered PECL before and for
whatever reason just kind of let it lapse, but given my current situation,
it looks like the obvious place to keep the wares...
I've got three extensions that would probably be useful to have in PECL at
the moment, two that I have previously released a few years ago and one
that I haven't gotten around to releasing for public consumption. They're
all licensed under a BSD-style license and can be found at
http://142.166.76.45/software/
cryptopp -- a strong cryptography extension based on the Crypto++ library
(http://www.cryptopp.com/), which is a public domain library. The extension
is sort of akin to mhash and mcrypt, although in my opinion it's a bit
easier to use. It can perform things like hex/bin conversions, has an OO
interface in PHP 5 and up and I think may be a bit easier for beginners to
work with. This extension is written in C++, if that makes a difference,
and was designed to be as cross-platform as I could make it. It's been
tested on various linux distros, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, OSX, Solaris and Windows
2000 and XP. Since PHP already has mhash and mcrypt, I can see why this
extension would be passed over, but I thought I'd offer it anyway. Always
nice to have alternatives, I guess. The extension is available at
http://142.166.76.45/software/versions.php/cryptopp-php,
and it's
documentation is at
http://142.166.76.45/software/cryptopp/cryptopp-php.html.
This extension is
moderately popular, judging by the download logs.
stem -- an extension that provides word stemming, a la Porter-style suffix
removal. In other words, feed it something like this:
"kicked";
"kicking";
"kicks"; or
"kickings"
And it will return "kick", which is the common root of each word. Look up
"Porter stemming" on Google or something if curiosity takes hold. The
extension currently does 12 languages, including English, Finnish, French,
German and more. It is based on the BSD-licensed Snowball library,
available at http://snowball.sourceforge.net/. Word
stemming is mostly
useful in search engines and information retrieval mechanisms and that sort
of thing. The extension is available at
http://142.166.76.45/software/versions.php/stem-php.
The other extension that I've been more or less sitting on is an extension
based on id3lib, an LGPL'd library that can read and write ID3 tags as well
as report general information on MPEG files and such. I know there's
already an ID3 extension available in PECL, but I figured I might as well
go for broke and put all three extensions on the block. It has a few more
bells and whistles compared to the current ID3 extension, but unfortunately
relies on id3lib, so it's give and take really. This extension is available
at http://142.166.76.45/software/versions.php/id3-php.
Frankly, the host that these things are on could go down at a moment's
notice, so I apologize if anybody actually wants to check them out.
If there's any interest in hosting any of the extensions, that would be
cool. Otherwise, I guess I'll be looking for new hosting options...
Cheers,
J
