Statements like that actually cause my brain to lock up from the sheer
volume of semi-informed opinions suddenly clamoring to be typed onto the
page. :)
I would hardly say that PHP has been marketed to its current popularity.
- PHP is a well-documented and supported language with a fairly gentle
learning curve.
- It provides an excellent starting point for non-programmers who *need* to
learn how to program.
- Working developers are able to spend more time writing code and less time
jumping through syntactic and idiomatic hoops.
- It has a very rapid development cycle that is driven by user needs.
These factors, not any artificial stimulation of consumer desires are the
driving factors in PHP's growth.
