PHP, in my opinion, is one of the least-marketed languages in the world. Nobody, but *NOBODY* stood behind it, unlike Perl, that has everyone and their mother standing behind it (O'Reilly and Microsoft, to name two). Other than the few expo's Zend's been promoting PHP in the last year, and Rasmus's sessions in various expo's, PHP got no marketing whatsoever.
PHP got to where it is today purely by excelling at its job.

According to a discussion on bootstrap (Perl6 list) PHP is an inferior language with very good marketing :-). Statements like that actually cause my brain to lock up from the sheer volume of semi-informed opinions suddenly clamoring to be typed onto the page. :) I would hardly say that PHP has been marketed to its current popularity. - PHP is a well-documented and supported language with a fairly gentle learning curve. - It provides an excellent starting point for non-programmers who *need* to learn how to program. - Working developers are able to spend more time writing code and less time jumping through syntactic and idiomatic hoops. - It has a very rapid development cycle that is driven by user needs. These factors, not any artificial stimulation of consumer desires are the driving factors in PHP's growth. - Zak -- PHP Quality Assurance Mailing List <http://www.php.net/> To unsubscribe, e-mail: php-qa-unsubscribe@lists.php.net For additional commands, e-mail: php-qa-help@lists.php.net To contact the list administrators, e-mail: php-list-admin@lists.php.net-- Zeev Suraski <zeev@zend.com> http://www.zend.com/
