Chris & All, If I did put together a detailed proposal, is there anywhere other than rfc where I might be able to submit it? Could I perhaps send it out to the internals list?Persevering and contributing are good. Persevering and antagonizing the community isn't going to help in the long run. When the moon is right (which isn't now) I'd host the RFC outside the PHP RFC wiki, bring up the topic in a short email on internals, and then later make the RFC "official". But before all this, getting some internals experience and a little karma with the internals list (and/or IRC) would really help your proposal.
I do genuinely believe in this feature as it prevents some designs from being accomplished without a workaround (an array on the parent class keyed by subclass). I've seen enough features discarded in the past and revisited once sufficient demand manifested. Although I agree with you that you have to catch people at the right phase of the moon to get past a wall of resistance. The only valid reasoning I've seen against this idea is that it would break existing code. That could be a very major problem. Very few changes have been allowed to cause major breakages.
Which I think I addressed (without addressing the complexity) by revising my idea into a new modifier during declaration. I've heard less opposition to this alternative idea as opposed to my original one, which is a good start, no? Thanks for the info, and hopefully you and others can answer my remaining questions! - Alex-- Blog: http://blogs.oracle.com/opal Twitter: http://twitter.com/ghrd
