That would explain it... :) I find it very embarassing that the problems I
have been encountering are all fairly easy to diagnose. I am just very
unfamiliar with these tools and seem to consistently forget to use my basic
problem solving skills...

That makes sense to me. ...maybe we could write a little m4 script that
checks for the existence of the needed m4 macros with ifdef???
