Thats no longer "majority of the syntax will remain the same" now is it?
You are proposing to complicate the <beep> out of the syntax because
of "all that good stuff".
Lets not, and say we did, and let the people doing most of the work
continue to work in a format they are comfortable with.
If that results in couple of people choosing to submit their
modifications in raw text rather then markedup, thats totally fine.
