I have reverse engineer the template engine from fast template
which was excellent except been slow. It included
integration with PHPlib and added HTML FORM based control class.
I am hoping from my work experience I can offer my 2 cents...
Here are some of the conclusion that I gathered from creating a template
system
1. Sophisticated template engine will be slow so try to cache the content
the does not need to be dynamicly generated everytime and have appropriate
expiration time/rule with manual override. It work really well with drop
down and message board.
2. it is a good idea to integrate xml/xsl model into php to define template
components. Looking at each style as an object. StyleObject :)
To enhance the ability to create smart style component that work with your
business
logics.
3. Designer need to have 110% control over every little looks and feel.
That is include any "<br>" tags. So make the Tag flexible and work your
template
"tag" or component from the perspective of a web designer. Attempt to offer
them the maximum flexibility in their design is my first priority when
design the template tags.
