The template spec may be designed to meet a specific project or a project paradigm in ISPI, and I guess it does, since Andrei said a couple of times he needs each and every feature for an upcoming project. I can't argue with that. I can argue on whether this should be PHP's 'official', standard approach towards templates. I think it shouldn't be, and that we should have a much simpler, presentation-only templating system built into PHP. I don't actually think we should choose sides here either way. If somebody wants a templating system that includes loops and conditionals, they are likely going to get it from somewhere. It would be nice if PHP could accomodate them.
Well, my entire point for the argument was that it would be bad if PHP featured this as a standard feature. Supporting everything is always the best thing to do, when you're introducing new standards (which is different than supporting existing standards, btw).
You didn't comment on the approach I described of having a template description file that configures a template engine to behave in certain ways. This would make PHP nicely template neutral but still provide most of the features people are looking for in a template system. The trick is obviously how the heck to build a parser that can change its brains on the fly like that.
I guess I didn't understand it completely, but if you it's basically a tool that almost lets you generate languages, I don't think it's a good thing to do. Simply put - there should be just one syntax to write logic in PHP, and that's PHP syntax. That's my opinion. Zeev -- Zeev Suraski <zeev@zend.com> http://www.zend.com/
