I tracked down my startup problems to the --with-mcrypt config
directive.
I had originally installed mcrypt/libmcrypt from rpms but using
mcrypt-2.2.5-1
rpm worked while mcrypt-2.2.5-2 rpm did not. The problem was that
mcrypt-2.2.5-2
was built without using the --disable-posix-threads directive. I
rebuilt
mcrypt-2.2.5 using the --disable-posix-threads directive, then rebuild
php
using the --with-mcrypt directive and everything works now.
