Hello Jirka,

As I have been saying doing XML-XSL processing to serve pages at online
time is a waste of performance, especially when there are much more
faster and objective methods. Anyway, that doesn't mean you could not make
good use of XSL transformation engine built-in PHP. It could well be used to
process and generate data offline.
Using PHP for offline or backend processing is often a forgot but very
useful possibility. I use PHP standalone CGI executable to setup site
installation like creating database structures and support files.
As a matter of fact my database abstraction layer (Metabase) has the
ability to parse files in a custom XML format that describes database
schemas that I want to be installed.
It takes a few seconds to parse and install an average database schema this
way and I do it using PHP standalone CGI executable run from the shell. It
has nothing to do with documents, so it could not benefit form XSL support,
but it is just an example of how PHP could be used with great benefit to do
install or maintenance tasks without running PHP from a Web server.
I am saying this because I noticed that since PHP is only advertised as a
program serve Web pages, lots of users of Metabase assume that databases
schemas are supposed to be installed by running scripts from the Web
server. PHP should be advertised also for doing offline jobs like this or
also as cron scripts which is a very requested ability that it can be used
from the beginning.
