Try this, it's what finally worked for me.
PHP4.0RC1 FreeBSD 3.2 Release
./configure' '--with-thread-safe-client'
'--with-gd=/usr/local/lib/gd1.3' '--with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs
Make sure you compile and completly install Apache with the so
module working before you attempt to get PHP running. This will put
a working Apache directory at /usr/local/apache' (generally) and
your apxs script will be at '/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs' which is
where it needs to be.
As for MySQL support try pointing directly at the location of your
MySQL client libs, not at your MySQL installation. This has worked
for me but I'm using FreeBSD not RedHat. FreeBSD drops the client
libs in /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.* and this is where I
point to in my configure line, when I use it.
I don't know about where RedHat puts libs, other than RedHat is
mentioned quite often (on all maillists I have) as arranging libs in
places other than most unixes/linuxes.
With PHP4.0RC1 I didn't need to add this to configure, PHP added
MySQL by default and it worked perfectly.
I just did this last week on three new servers and it worked fine.
DAve.
