I tried out using the header function with the dll. It does seem to work, whereas I understood that it wouldn't work with the cgi. Using the script fragment in the manual, an authentication box does pop up, but it doesn't seem that there is any way to get a successful authentication. Is there an example of how to do this with IIS? Or is it just not going to be possible?
It's possible. However, you must turn off NTLM authentication if you want to use PHP's basic authentication. You can do it by running the Microsoft Management Console, opening your server's properties, selecting the 'Directory Security' tab, hitting the Edit button on the 'Anonymous Access and Authentication Control', and disabling NTLM (basic and anonymous access should be turned on).
