Clearly, 3.0.12 is not capable of versioning, as the feature was introduced
later. In hind site, I recall now reading someone's post to this list,
after 3.0.12's release, that the (then) current cvs was required, but being
a dolt sometimes, I plodded on... :>
In my defence {read: cheap cop out} the INSTALL file in the beta3 release
makes no mention that a version of php > 3.0.12 is required for versioning
purposes.

Cool. Do post your findings, they would be most helpful. In the meantime,
Im able to switch back and forth between versions in a couple of seconds,
so Im not put out by my own stupidity at all. ;>
My thanks.
