I see it happening on your screen i've no idea why that's happening.
I'm on windows, and it works fine in all major browsers.

I still like the the http://ambitious.ca/php/search-1.png idea.
Would be awesome if we could somehow populate some parts of it from
the client side, and do xhr do populate the larger parts.
Answer...
Previously this was not possible as the plugin adds the autocompelte results
onto document.body. I have added a custom container config option called
"resultsSelector" so we can have a pre-defined <div> with pretty segments in
it like the image on ambitious.ca and have it pre-populate the correct
section. Yay!!

Quick update on this. I just exchanged emails with the plugin author (Jörn
Zaefferer) and he informs me that a new (official) jQuery UI autocomplete
widget is due out in the next month or so. The new version is supposed to
have a more flexible datasource design, so "customizing to add sorting
should be trivial."
In the meantime I can just hack something together for prototype purposes.
Answer...
That's what I've done and pointed out in my previous message to the mailing
list, lets look forward to the new autocomplete version :)
Cheers.
