The only time I had problems with httpd crashing was when I compiled using
APXS. When I compiled using --with-apache=path/to/apache/source/files and
then compiled apache using the following:
./configure --prefix=/usr \
--with-layout=RedHat \
--add-module=/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/mod_bandwidth.c \
--add-module=/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/mod_put.c \
--activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a \
--enable-module=all \
--enable-shared=max \
--enable-rule=EAPI \
--disable-rule=WANTHSREGEX \
--disable-module=auth_dbm \
--with-perl=/usr/bin/perl \
--enable-suexec \
--suexec-docroot=/home/httpd/html \
--suexec-caller=nobody
This seems to work well for me. Best of luck to ya.
