You need to install the Oracle 8i *client* on your machine that has
php4 on it if you want to use the OCI extensions. This is true for all
commercial databases supported by php4. php4 uses the libraries that come
with the database clients, so unless those libraries are installed, no
rdbms will work.
Luckily, due to mysql's open source nature, php4 can include mysql support
built in. Oracle 8i client is a free upgrade via their w3 site. I think
the reason that php4 doesn't come bundled with the needed commercial rdbms
libraries is due to licensing issues [i assume; perhaps Rasmus could
clarify].
