Sascha - I don't think Manuel is blaming Php for the problem he's
getting when trying to query "e-na.net" for an MX record.
Generally, when you request a DNS server for an MX record, you don't
specify a particular host, you basically say: "Gimme the MX record for
'domain-name.com' please". The DNS server then checks the zone file and
hands back the host in the MX record, which then needs to be looked up
itself. If there are more than one MX record, they're probably handed
back in order of the preference number in the MX records themselves.
The problem Manuel is getting, is that when he asks for the MX record
for e-na.net, he gets nothing. I did a whois on e-na.net to get the name
authoritive name servers for it, and then ran nslookup using the primary
as the server to query.
I got the same behaviour with nslookup - requested an MX record with
none returned. I could only get one by asking for 'www.e-na.nt' or
'mail.e-na.net' which shouldn't have to be done - after all, how can you
know what hostnames are in the domain without guessing?
When I do the same for other domains, for example, 'qgl.org' I get an MX
record back right away, both from nslookup and Php *without* having to
guess any hostnames like 'mail.qgl.org', which is what you have to do
for e-na.net.
It's clear that this isn't Php, but more likely some issue with the name
server which is authoritive for e-na.net, but what Manuel is asking, is
"ok, so how can I do it then?"
Basically, I can't see a way - if the DNS server isn't going to reurne
MX records for 'e-na.net' then what can you do but try and guess some
host names to query for MX records directly?
but the funny thing is, I sent a test email to fakeusername@e-na.net and
it got there fine - Manuel received it as a non-existant user-type
bounce.
If Php or nslookup can't get an MX record from e-na.net, how was my smtp
server able to know where to deliver it I wonder? I checked the log as I
did it and it went straight there - perhaps it just used the A record
for 'e-na.net' as default and tried to connect on port 25?
