You honestly don't think it would be reasonable to have a global user
state/authentication object that _all_ pages used, and then to have sub-sites of
the page each have a session object or two that's specific to that portion? The
way session support in php4 is implemented doesn't lend itself to being able to
access two sessions on the same page very easily, so I don't think that's a
reasonable solution...
