It's not enabled by default...
sure, --with-zlib OR buildling DLL and adding in php.ini should be sufficient, shouldn't it? I saw it has been moved to zlib.c or is there an additonal check like HAVE_OB_GZOUPUT
I just tried this then...
<?php
$a=500;
ob_start("ob_gzhandler");
echo str_repeat('a',$a);
ob_end_flush();
?>

I've tried to get this transparent compression working, but I was not able to check if it worked or not?
I thought I simply check the headers sent back?
GET /file.php HTTP/1.0
Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate
Host: myhost.com
Isn't the above sufficient, is there any browser capable of displaying headers?
All I got back was a normal response without any "Content-Encoding" header...
