I haven't read this entire thread, but how about a compromise. Make the
parser bail if it sees <?xml<space> even when short-tags are on?
I don't see turning short tags off by default as being a good idea. The
people that will be affected by such a move are the people who aren't at
the level of using XML and PHP together in the same file. And the people
that such a change would help are the ones who are more than capable of
configuring PHP correctly.
