This should also have an optional argument to set the session id
explicitly, so someone can allow logging back in to a session (if
for some reason PHP has lost track of the user). In fact, it should
probably return whether the session was assigned a new identifier
or was found to be an old one.
This would even allow someone to implement GET-based or hidden-field
based session ids on top if all we provide is cookie-based. (Not
that I really think we want to limit ourselves, but it may make the most
sense for initial implementations.)
(To be clear, I agree with everything you're saying, I'm just
pointing out places where we can leave wiggle room for people
to do more on top of the basics we provide.)
The other optional argument to session_start() to allow the location
of the session information is also important, I think. It would
allow people to multiple session "zones" on different pages, for
example, and is also important for IPP hosting where you don't
necessarily have access to the normal PHP configuration mechanisms.
