We can build upon the UW IMAP programmer's experience in this case, their code
is known to work on dozens of platforms. They have documented their locking
efforts in docs/locking.txt available in the standard imap distribution.
If that is not enough, qmail claims to support "any number of NFS clients can
deliver mail to him [the user] at the same time." By using a maildir-related
technique, we could probably even support NFS mounted working directories.

Well, that is a hairy point. PHPLIB uses a non-deterministic method (calling
rand(), if the result is smaller than a given value, it executes a garbage
collection function).

I agree with you. But that does not stop me to think about API extensions. ;)
So, forget my proposal, the API will be as light-weight as possible.
