I'm sorry if I was late in joining this discussion. I'll just use this message as a general response to some of those who took the time to write responses to some of my queries, then I will go away and leave you all alone :-) <huge cheers from the crowd> Obviously this is a very sensitive issue. I've tried to use constructive language when raising some concerns but many people seem bent on emotionally charged "backlashes" rather than working through the issues. OK fine, there seems to be a steadfast unwillingness to try and understand what people are saying so I for one will stop wasting time trying to say anything. I am disappointed to see that people make dicisions based on discussion fatigue rather than talking the issues through. And no, I don't buy the arguement that everything has already been worked through. Personally, I can live with having to work around the short open tag bug. I'd like to say that I couldn't care less but that would be a lie since I have been a huge PHP fan and a strong advocate - so issues like this *do* matter to me. I'm also a strong XML advocate because I believe it will solve many of the frustrations that many HTML developers have experienced over the years. It's dissapointing to see all the excellent work that has been done by the XML developers (XML, DOM_XML, XSLT, XML-RPC) is somewhat sullied by people's bloody mindedness on the *potential* extra three characters in <?php Sure, the issue is not cut and dried so it's easy to decide on one camp and then fight tooth and nail for that side of the issue, coming up with all the excuses under the sun. I found one decent response on the "we are against eliminating short tags" camp, and that was that "there should be little to no changes to people's code when migrating to version 5." Ok, if that's the case, then things aren't so clear about what decision makes the most sense. There's no point in devling down deeper then that because the "porting to v5" issue is the bottom line as far as I can see after having surveyed the threads. Aside from this issue, I think everyone is doing a wonderful job and PHP and I continue to be it's biggest fan :-) Anyway, that's my 10c and I will leave it at that. If you want to reach me, it will have to be off list. kind regards, Terence.
