You'll also want input from those on this list who do this for a living, but
here's something to think about trying. This would work best for
small/medium-sized companies.
-- Get your own dedicated server from an ISP that has good bandwidth
-- Develop PHP/database web applications for companies
-- Host the applications, and the databases, on your server, with your
client's employees accessing it through SSL-enabled web browsers
This would of course require you establishing a long-term relationship with
the company, but that's not a bad thing for several reasons. It would also
provide some monthly residual income for you, in addition to the one-time
web app creation charge.
You would need to get good at server admin, including regular backups and
security.
I too would be interested in feedback from those who do this for a living.
