Something which you may want to consider is getting a dedicated server. I haven't run across too many shared hosting environments where PHP runs as a module. I know 30 people will write to contradict me(!) but my own experience has been that most shared hosting services don't want to bother with the extra security issues and just make PHP cgi mode only. Having said that, I THINK ahnet.com runs as a module, but it's only PHP3 (last I checked). Perhaps you could invest in a small dedicated server and split the cost with a few trusted development friends. A dedicated server could be had for as little as $100/month here in the states. With 'high end' virtual/shared accounts running $50/month, the dedicated isn't too bad. Maybe there's a local ISP in the area who will host a box for you for a nominal fee? 16 months ago I bought a full machine, and have it hosted with a company that gives me decent bandwidth, for $95/month. Their prices have gone up for new customers, but I have full root access, multiple IPs, etc. For that price, imo, it's hard to beat (and I've someone to call if there's a problem). Asking larger hosting companies to do something 'out of the ordinary' for just you, or a handful of users, goes against their business model (they ARE a business!) and the extra cost of configuring things to your specs probably won't be offset by the extra $20/month they get from you.
