I suffered a great deal in the beginning, but that was due to my ignorance. I chose this path because I wanted to gain in depth knowledge of the language and it's environment. Understanding the compilation process is straightforward - the complexity comes in when you try to figure out if you need this or that option compiled. Analyzing your needs and looking up the docs for the options that you need to make your server secure and functional teaches you a lot about the inner workings of PHP. That is the thing that gets short circuited by an install program. Also, this language is not static at all - how many releases have been out this year? It is important to be able to upgrade your installation - if you are running an install program, then you have the access to compile it, and if that is so then you should know how. I'm not saying that install programs are bad necessarily, but I feel that this branch of server side scripting (PHP, Perl, Python, maybe Tcl) requires a good knowledge of Linux/unix - unlike perhaps ASP, or Java Servlets, which are more encapsulated AFAIK. Keep in mind that I came to these shores looking for in depth knowledge - and now I use that in my job. Perhaps I would think differently if I was working under the incredible time deadlines of the web industry - and had to install PHP and use it. All views are valid, and all paths may lead to the same goal - who knows? ______________________________________ Kevin Beckford Programmer Big Orbit - Specializing in new media for youth www: http://www.bigorbit.com email: kbeckford@bigorbit.com [t] 416.516.0705 [f] 416.516.9256
