I would just like to say that I am happy that people Like Linus and Rasmus and other PHP visionaries do not share the same perspective as what appears to be many on this list! Otherwise, we would not even be discussing this. I guess some food for thought. Those are perfect examples to show that the real world is very different than the ideal world. In the ideal world developers like Rasmus and Linus would work full time in the development of their software. In the real world they had to get real jobs to pay their expenses and support their families. Rasmus and Linus actually got good jobs but they can no longer dedicate full time to the development of their Open Source software. In contrast, Zend guys for instance wanted to dedicate full time to PHP, so they had to build their own business where they have closed source products for sale and at the same time they dedicate full time to a crucial part of PHP development which is the Zend engine. In the real world it could not be better, but it can be a lot worse. If you go around and check all the developers that contribute to PHP development, you will notice that some of them have to take up jobs that take most of their time and they are not as happy as they would be if they could dedicate full time to PHP development. -- Regards, Manuel Lemos
