In PHP the cost of not translating code to PHP (no <? opening tag) is miniscule. I've been
parsing all pages via the PHP engine for a few years now. The overhead, as far as I can measure, is
less than 1%. I'm supporting about 40 virtual hosts, and running everything through an apache
module to do page request counting to boot. The load on a 350 PII hardly every gets over 5% - MySQL
& ht://dig make it hit 30% or so, and I have some custome programs that hit around 60% when they
(infrequently) run. I also have 3 large mailing lists running ezmlm. The machine isn't close to
being maxed out yet.
