Sorry to bother you, but the fact hat you are supporting about 40
virtual hosts caught my attention. Do you configure php
with --enable-trans-sid? If not, do you pass the session
implicitly in every link or have you created a function? If you
did configure with --enable-trans-sid, does it work for all
virtual hosts? We have it configured that way, and for one
virtual host it works, but the other it does not. Just wondering
if you might be able to provide some insight on this problem.

In PHP the cost of not translating code to PHP (no <? opening
tag) is miniscule. I've been parsing all pages via the PHP engine
for a few years now. The overhead, as far as I can measure, is
less than 1%. I'm supporting about 40 virtual hosts, and running
everything through an apache module to do page request counting
to boot. The load on a 350 PII hardly every gets over 5% - MySQL
& ht://dig make it hit 30% or so, and I have some custome
programs that hit around 60% when they (infrequently) run. I also
have 3 large mailing lists running ezmlm. The machine isn't close
to being maxed out yet.
