I pass variables in the url like this: http://www.domain.com/store/category/Music/Rock/13245 "store" is a directory, and therefore doesn't get read in as a variable. "category" is a php file, without an extenstion. "Music" is the first variable, in this case a category "Rock" is the second variable, in this case the subcategory "13245" is the third variable, in this case the part number I really like doing it this way, and it makes for human readable urls too... and ANY search engine will index them (and therefore all of the products in the database that have links into them, which is all of them). It takes a little getting used to, and there are some precautions you have to take (use the php functions to use only HTML safe characters, for example), but it is easy to to, and I won't go back to the old way. You can also stick an index.html, or details.html or whatever on the end of the URL, which is still a variable, not a file, and can tell the page how to display the info, or what to display.
